UN Indigenous Day
The Centre for Tribal Studies (CTS) at the University of Delhi organised an International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on August 9, 2024. Held at the Department of Anthropology, the event was a resounding success, showcasing a deep commitment to inclusivity and cultural appreciation.
The event was honoured by the presence of Professor Bijayalakshmi Nanda, Principal of Miranda House as the Guest of Honor, with Professor Sucheta Sen Chaudhuri (Central University of Jharkhand) delivering a thought-provoking keynote address on “Anthropology Indigenous Literature and Beyond.” Professor Soumendra M Patnaik, Director of CTS, set the tone with his opening remarks, advocating for a shift from traditional evolutionary approaches to a more inclusive and civilisational perspective in the study of tribal communities.
In her address, Professor Bijayalakshmi Nanda emphasized the need for privileged groups to engage actively in promoting inclusivity and support marginalized communities in their quest for dignity and respect. Her inspiring words highlighted the crucial role of societal involvement in achieving equitable progress.
Professor Sucheta Sen Chaudhuri's keynote speech explored the significance of understanding tribal worldviews through ethnographic fiction, drawing insights from four notable novels. This perspective illuminated the rich ethos and customs of tribal life, offering a fresh lens on their cultural narratives.
Dr. Avitoli G Zhimo, Joint Director (CTS), elucidated the importance of photography in capturing the essence of tribal culture. She elaborated on the motivation behind organizing a photography and one-minute video competition on ‘Aspect of tribal life: Essence and Significance’ which sparked considerable interest among undergraduate, postgraduate, and research scholars nationwide. The competition celebrated creativity, with awards for the two best photographs and one-minute videos, each accompanied by certificates and cash prizes.
